In an exploration on the interaction of reality and what an individual’s perception can create from reality, American Poet Wallace Stevens said, “What our eyes behold may well be the text of life but one’s meditations on the text and the disclosures of these meditations are no less a part of the structure of reality.” With this painting, I wanted to create the suggestion of a simple enclosure, or framework, to represent what would be empirically seen as “reality”, and then imbue it with depth and mystery, allowing the viewer the opportunity to meditate upon their own personal meaning and image of the structure – embracing or confining, protective or restrictive, the space within or without.
